My mother was an avid reader who never read to me.

I am just like her.

Where my mom developed her love of reading is a mystery to me. I can only guess that it was when she got her GED. She worked hard and ended up being valedictorian with English being her second language. Seeing the power in learning is inspiring. We all move on from school inspired in different ways. My mom was inspired to keep learning and that was by reading.

Growing up, mom always had a new book that she was reading. She was known to lock herself in her room during the day when she couldn’t put it down and my siblings and I knew not to bother her. She also lost sleep at times and was cranky the next day.

We went to the library often as there was no amazon back then. I don’t remember her ever buying any books. Personally, I visit the library for my fun books; but do invest in books that will teach me something. I like to highlight and write in my books.

At the library, she would get lost in the adult section, while us kids were in the kids' section. She would come to look for us when she was done.

If I wanted to read it would have to be on my own. I didn’t know any different so I never expected my mom to sit and read with me.
